TIFFiny

A databending and media reinterpretation tool written in Rust.

TIFFiny is being shaped around the idea that media can be converted, inspected and reinterpreted across audio, images, video, RAW data and binary structures.

This page describes the project direction from its repository planning documents. The project is unfinished and should not be presented as currently functional.

01 / concept

Media as material to reinterpret

The project plan combines two related ideas: databending, or controlled mutation of media data, and reinterpretation, such as turning audio into images or RAW data into waveforms, spectrograms or video frames.

Databending

Planned binary tools include controlled and random corruption, byte shifting, XOR transforms, chunk scrambling, header manipulation, entropy injection, byte swapping and structure mutation.

Reinterpretation

The roadmap includes workflows that treat one kind of media as another, with recursive conversion and safeguards for experimental loops.

02 / planned systems

A larger creative workspace

The TODO roadmap describes a modular conversion engine, processing scheduler, async tasks, events, logging and recovery, alongside internal abstractions for audio, images, video, RAW data, binary buffers, metadata and timelines.

GUI foundation

Planned panels include a sidebar, toolbar, inspector, timeline, console, preview and project explorer, with drag and drop, shortcuts, undo/redo, notifications and progress feedback.

Media engines

Audio, image and video engines are planned with decoding, processing, rendering, playback, frame work and analysis capabilities.

RAW and binary

A future RAW/binary engine may include a byte viewer, hex editor, entropy visualizer, binary heatmap, bitplane viewer, offset viewer and structure inspector.

03 / conversion paths

Moving between formats

The planned conversion systems describe several directions for experimentation, from visualizing sound to synthesizing audio from pixels and sonifying motion.

Audio↔Image↔Video

Audio to image

Planned modes include spectrograms, waveforms, FFT visualization, frequency color mapping, polar rendering, RGB mapping, byte mapping and RAW reinterpretation.

Image and video to audio

Possible future paths include pixel synthesis, scanline synthesis, RGB channel synthesis, motion sonification, brightness mapping and optical flow synthesis.

04 / status

Still being defined

The repository TODO marks the project identity, UI direction, architecture philosophy, conversion philosophy, scope and databending workflow as not yet defined. The remaining roadmap is likewise planned rather than shipped.

NowPlanning

Core architecture, GUI, media engines, conversion systems and project boundaries are still being worked out.

LaterExperimentation

Presets, live inputs, real-time rendering, GPU features, CLI automation, packaging and future experimental modes are listed as possible directions.

TIFFiny is a direction for exploring how media changes when its structure, signals and representations are deliberately crossed. It is not currently available to download or use.
